May 23, 2013 by claraarnold

A few early morning shots of Rethymno where i am staying – the inner harbour and the massive Venetian fort protecting us! Delightful spot located in the centre of the island.

My Kind of Day

May 22, 2013 by claraarnold

Yesterday I hired a guide to take me to some of the remote villages in the mountains where the tourists don’t go. What a day! A short way into the trip Costas, my guide, tells me he is an anarchist – but the good kind! We spent the day talking, eating and drinking with locals – well he talked and I took pictures! In this village we were even treated to a tour of a house from the Venetian times […]

Minoan Monsoon!

May 17, 2013 by claraarnold

I’ve been in Crete for three days now and hitting 60% on shutter banging winds and rain. So much for 365 days of sunshine. However, the one day the sun shone was blissful and made the place magical. Rethymno, a town with strong Venetian vibes is home base and situated mid island making it ideal for day trips. It’s a good size but the old town is quaint nestled behind a large fort, yet to be explored and properly photographed. […]

Hot Lips – Three Generations of Trumpeters!

May 4, 2013 by claraarnold

Every hour on the hour if you look way up to the top of the tallest tower of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow a little window opens and you catch a glint of light as a lone trumpeter plays the Hejnal Mariacki. Over six days in Cracow I grew to love the tune from what I imagined was a short, somewhat rotund fellow with red cheeks and a jolly disposition.  I would sit in one of the many cafes on […]

Jodphur, Rajasthan, For Brahmins blue is the symbol of purity

A Chopped Head is Cheaper Than a Felled Tree!

April 23, 2013 by claraarnold

The Great Khejarli Sacrifice Almost every fort or palace in Rajasthan has a story of a great struggle to defend territory and ultimately a way of life. Lookout towers and serpentine ramparts built to protect ruling maharaja stretch for miles. The story of the Bishnois people and their struggle to maintain a pure way of life is less grandiose but equally enduring as the epic tales of the maharajas. I had spent several days in Jodhpur, the famous blue city […]

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

February 21, 2013 by claraarnold

Jantar Mantar is a enormous open air observatory built in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about astrology and measurement. It looks more futuristic rather than almost 300 years old. Heath & safety is not high on the priority list. Check out the ladder! Safety harness!???
